Walking Breaks with Pete Skipworth & Andrew Tuxworth
Peter lives in and has been walking in the Lincolnshire Wolds, an area of
outstanding natural beauty, for 26 years, in all weathers and conditions.
He says that he finds the stunning landscapes, the isolated villages
and the slow pace of life ideal. He also finds something new on every
walk.
Peter can trace his ancestry back to 1541, and his ancestors have lived
and worked in the Wolds for centuries. One great grandfather was a
blacksmith the other was a teacher, many of his ancestors were farmers
and one was a postmaster in a small village, all living in the Lincolnshire
Wolds.
During his time walking he has acquired a vast knowledge of the area
including the architecture, the geography and the geology. For him
though the more interesting facts are the history, characters and
events that have made the area special.
Knowledge
He can tell you about things that are not recorded, which he has observed
on his walks, and they will make your walk even more fascinating.
He knows the churches well as he uses them as a first point of contact when he wants to learn about a village. He says that they hold a mine of information about village people and their lives.
He also takes a particular interest in the wildlife and plants that live and grow in the area, and he will tell you about the prominent people and characters that have visited the Wolds. From Roman occupation, the Saxons, King Henry VI through to Tennyson, Sir Joseph Banks, Samuel Johnson and Oliver Cromwell.
The Walks
Peter will take you on more than a walk, and you will learn more about this fascinating beautiful area, it will be a memorable experience.
He suggests that when you come on the walks, which will be approximately 6 miles with some hill walking, you use suitable footwear and bring clothing for any inclement weather.
Andrew Tuxworth, your host at Flintwood Farm, also takes guided walks
of 12-20 miles, over farms & paths very seldom used. Accompanied
by his 2 labradores, Andrew has been walking in the Wolds for 30 years.
He knows all the local farmers and can give a good insight into the
farming hyistory of the Wolds.
